CHILD WELFARE
Songtime has always taken pride in the supportive and caring atmosphere we have offer our students. We are dedicated to developing the potential of children in an environment of safety and security.

We ensure that all of the tutors who work with our children on a regular basis are all CRB checked and encourage them to register as Licensed Matrons. In the event that a guest tutor from the industry is asked to partake in a workshop we will then place a licensed chaperone to accompany the children at all times.

PERFORMANCE LICENCES
If your child is below compulsory school leaving age then all parents will need to complete a Performance Licence for your child to take part in any productions including our own shows.

We will send you the relevant forms with a very strict deadline for return. You will need to enclose two passport size photographs and a copy of your child's birth certificate. Please note that these are the rules of the LEA and not Songtime rules and unless these forms are returned at the correct time it is is within the LEA rights to forbid any child to perform in any production.

Please understand that unless your child is licenced your child will not be insured for any accidents that may happen within the production.

THE RULES
If your child is taking part in a performance where either an admission will be charged, or that will be broadcast in some fashion, there will be a strong chance that she/he will need to have a license in order to take part! The rules for a child performing are long and rather complicated.

If you have any questions, speak to the Local Education Authority (LEA) department of your local council. They will be able to give you the most accurate advice in this area, since they issue the licence for your child. The law is in place for the PROTECTION and safety of your children.

How do I become a Chaperone?
It is part of the Licencing Laws that we have chaperones in attendance for our productions. This is usually formed by the parents of the children. Many parents find themselves drifting into the position of Chaperone, and end up applying for the licence needed. In fact, any responsible person, who enjoys working with children can become one!

The best qualities needed will include, patience, resourcefulness, care and understanding of children, and knowledge of the rules and regulations surrounding their employment. To become one, you will need to apply to your local LEA. They will send you an application form, which you will need to send back with references from 2 people, and an enhanced Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) application form (or a copy of an existing check, if you have already got one). They may also ask for 2 passport photographs, and some will ask you to attend an interview. Please note that a simple police check is NOT enough. It can take anything from 6-12 weeks until the licence comes through (depending on your CRB check). You cannot chaperone without it, and you will need to re-apply every year or two depending on your LEA (although your CRB certificate will be valid for 3 years).
